Using LI during your job search while keeping this information away from your "boss". Using LI without your employer knowing that you are seeking new opportunities is not as hard as your think. To begin, check your settings and update accordingly. 

The most important setting is about notifying your network of any changes to your profile. 
Turn that off along with your profile privacy setting. 

Then you need to download the Job Search Mobile App (good on either IoS or Android) which stops notifications from being published but also provides 100% privacy when searching, viewing, and applying for jobs.
