Salary compression occurs when there are little or no differences in pay, combined with large differences in responsibilities, skill level or qualifications. The inequity may occur between supervisors and subordinates or between new and experienced personnel in the same position. Or it may occur between pay-range midpoints of successive job grades or related grades across pay structures.
