Why The Job Market Has Been So Wild This Year

December 2023

Hope this note find everyone to be well and gearing for the holiday season.

In a nutshell, CY2023 has been, far and away, the most turbulent I have ever seen in the job market. The reasons are multi-dimensional and reach beyond the scope of commerce. Specifically, employers and employees are more adversarial than we have witnessed in 30+ years. The relationship is contentious and begins with how each entity defines:

1) Work From Home (WFH)

2) Hybrid Workforce

3) Remote

Business operations and personal lives have been radically affected by the ambiguity. Job search cycles are taking far too long, leaving both sides frustrated. Which group shoulders the burden of blame? Likely both. Would welcome your thoughts. Please send me a note on LinkedIn:

However, this is not the only issue affecting the job market. Factor in economics (inflation – which is still bad, despite what the FED tells us), social (bigotry, downgrading in quality of life, esp. in cities), political (need I say more and it is on all levels, not just in Washington), the two (2) wars overseas and general discontentment in the direction of the world order all factor into the stop / go nature of the market.

On a brighter note, we are not in a recession. Therefore, I anticipate a robust 1st 90 days of 2024 as related to new opportunities across all sectors, including tech, which has been the most affected by the issues of 2023. What is happening in tech is more of a “resetting” and not contraction. Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be saving the sector, just like cloud commuting / SaaS did 10+ years ago. Again, would like to hear your thoughts:

On a brighter note, I am ramping up my speaking engagements and workshops (in-person and via video technology. Subjects include:

• Resume Writing

• Interviewing

• Ageism in the Workplace

• Career Management

• ATS Best Practices

• Job Search Strategies

And hold onto your seats, I have been posting on TikTok daily: @allanwritescareers. Stop by it is informative and entertaining.

Here’s to a happy holiday and a less turbulent 2024!
