A great way to identify the potential for new positions is to create news alerts for companies that you are interesting in working for as a full-time employee (even a contractor if necessary). The news alerts could be on LI, major trade journals, newspapers, magazines etc. You are looking for mergers, new product launches, product line expansion, etc - all of which provide new career opportunities. When an alert interests you, start attempting to make contacts within the organization.
