Ageism Affects all Workers - Ages 18 - 80 - Part 6 - Marginalization

 Ageism Affects all Workers - Ages 18 - 80 - Part 6

Marginalization is a discriminatory practice that affects both younger and older workers. It involves exclusion from meetings, denial of resources, limited access to opportunities, spaces, or services, and more.

Essentially, it pushes employees to the sidelines of the company, rendering their contributions undervalued.

Ageism Affects All Workers 18-80 - Part 5 - Young Women

The Age Discrimination Act of 1967 protects those over 40 years of age. It is very difficult to enforce. By definition, the law provides no protects to those under 40yo. For example, young women are disproportionately affected by bias. "Over half of women under 30 say their age has negatively impacted them in the workplace."Women feel the pinch both at the beginning of their careers and once they transition to "older" status.

Ageism Affects All Workers 18-80 - Part 4 - Definition of Reverse Ageism

Ageism Affects All Workers 18-80 - Part 3

REVERSE AGEISM - sometimes called "youngism," is prejudice or discrimination against individuals—typically younger employees—based on the assumption they are inexperienced, immature, lazy, entitled, naive or less capable due to their age. It often manifests in the workplace as being dismissed for ideas, passed over for promotions, or subjected to stereotypes by older colleagues

Decision makers on the older side of the spectrum have issues with the work habits of the Gen Z and millennial demographic and their perceived inclination to prioritize work/life balance and unmotivated, not o mention the feelings of entitled attitudes. Unfortunately, the stereotype i is unfair and it hurts younger workers who are hardworking and should not be defined by the flaws of others.

Ageism Affects All Workers 18-80 - Part 2

Ageism Affects All Workers 18-80 - Part 2

Prejudices / insecurities towards younger, high achievers can affect younger workers as well as older workers.  For younger workers, older managers / executives may have a hard time justifying in their own mind how that under 30 yo professional can know so much in a short period of time spent in their career.  Excuses are connocted that deliberately inhibit the advancement other younger worker based on preconceived notions, which are really veiled prejudices.

Ageism Affects All Workers 18-80 - Part 1

Ageism - Don't be Fooled - this is not just about older workers. While 90% of workers 40+ have indicated they have experience ageism, it affects people ages 18-80.

For top achieving, younger workers (say under 30), many are passed over for promotions not because they cannot do the job but because he / she haven't "been in the industry long enough" and are riding the coattails of older workers.

Unfair Promotion Practices and Limitation of Opportunities

Unfair Promotion Practices and Limitation of Opportunities

One of the most fundamental forms of workplace discrimination involves “unfair treatment” because of an employee’s membership in a protected class. This often manifests as disparate treatment in promotions, opportunities, job responsibilities or hours. Common examples of such actions, which are illegal if based on an employee’s protected characteristics, include:

1. Involuntary reduction of hours

2. Assignment to undesirable or less-favorable shifts

3. Reassignment to a different department or location

4. Removal or limitation of job responsibilities

5. Exclusion from meetings or other communications

6. Denial of opportunities to work with certain clients

7. Assignment to less profitable territories

8. Patterns of people in specific groups who receive promotions over equally or more qualified workers

9. Inconsistent or unsupportable reasons given for denial of promotion or exclusion from opportunities

Concerning email addresses as related to job searches:

Please stay away from legacy domains (aol.com; hotmail.com). These email domains are 25+ years old and can place the user in a negative light because of ageism. Ageism is a huge issue in job search, like it or not. You do not want to be ruled out of consideration because of potential age. Is it legal, no. Can you prove it, doubtful.

Ageism - Use Education to Combat the Issue

Ageism - Use Education to Combat the Issue

Take the time and enroll in a training class, certification course or perhaps a degree program. Reposition your EDUCATION section of the resume to ensure the age-old college graduation date is not your most recent entry.

Many hiring managers fear older workers will be behind on their skills and set in their ways. Let your education section show that’s not true.

Tackling Ageism:

 Tackling Ageism:

Perception:

Older workers lack technology skills or will require extra training time.

Solution:

In your resume and interviews, note technology training and skills without overestimating them. If this is a weak area, explore training options in your community and online to expand your skills and get up to date.

Deep Thoughts - AGEISM:

  Deep Thoughts - AGEISM:

DEI should be DAEI (Diversity, Age, Equality and Inclusion). If our leaders (politically, socially, business) showed some smarts, they would do something about the "A" (tax breaks for employing older workers, promote the attributes of older workers)). Older workers have a ton to offer. Give this hard-working, ethically and passionate group a shot...
