Fonts

The only fonts that should be used are universal fonts - the ones that open the same on PCs and Macs of all ages. These are:

Times Roman
Arial
Century
MS Sans Serif
Book Antiqua
Century Gothic
Calibri

There are some other universal ones, but these are the only ones that are also easy to read.

Times Roman is probably the most common, because everyone's used to writing and reading it. But HR reps have grown bored with it, and at the smaller levels (10pt), it's tough to read. For technical resumes, such as engineers or IT persons, Arial is the preferred font. For executives, Book Antiqua or Century.

BeAs crazy as it may seem, totally innocent words can create problems for spam filters. Consider the alternate meanings of these words (as examples) and how spam filters would likely block your resume if it contained them:
  • Free
  • Expand
  • Trial
  • Mortgage
  • Cum (like cum laude)
  • Unusual fonts or colors
  • Dollar amounts
  • HTML formatting in your e-mail (vs. flat text)
