College Students and Their Parents Should Read This

 College Students:

I had a conversation with a soon-to-be college student about 15 minutes ago. Dedicated and motivated to succeed, he was very frustrated with his job search.

Appears that his college counselor told him to add an objective statement to the resume as well as his picture, among other line items. The counselor did not know the best practices for submitting resumes as related to applicant tracking systems (ATS). The student (not a client, as least not as of this moment) was not getting any traction since July.

Therefore, two things:

1. If you are a college student, start reading up on resume and job search best practices, esp. as related to ATS, resume pictures, summary statements and more

2. If you are a college counselor, you have an ethical obligation to stay abreast of trends that affect job searches. If you cannot fulfill what I consider to be this very reasonable obligation, go find another job. You are doing your students and college a monumental disservice.
