Starting Your Job Search...Experienced or New Grads - Read this

Starting Your Job Search...Experienced or New Grads - Read this

I know the market is challenging but I strongly recommend that you stick to the fundamentals so you manage your search properly.

Now that you are starting your search, the three (3) tips below should be useful:

1. Network!  Think of the people you know -- relatives, friends, professors, classmates, co-workers and others. Make more of an effort to meet with people, and use these conversations to ask their advice, to make

them aware of your job search, to learn more about their jobs or their organizations, and to get the names of others who might be useful in your job search.

2. Create a contact database. Write down all the employers you contact, the date you sent your résumé, any contact made,

people you talk to, and notes about those contacts. Write / type notes as soon as you hear about an opportunity or when you leave an interview. Get into the habit of updating your database daily.

3. Make a "to do" list every day. This will help you organize your list of priorities and keep you focused on finding that perfect job.

"Spraying and Praying"

"Spraying and Praying"

Are you "spraying" your resume to apply for jobs and "praying" for a response.

Don't!!!

It is silly and inefficient. According to a recent survey conducted by Robert Half, a Bay Area talent and business solutions firm, over 50% of hiring managers said that AI-generated resumes are “flooding the market,” making it difficult to weed out candidates who are actually qualified for roles. To combat this torrent of resumes, 33% of hiring managers are now using AI-detection tools and spending more time training employees on how to spot ones that feel authentic.

Be Realistic about Job Search

Be realistic and make your life easier. Do not throw too many variables into the decision making process.

In other words, if you are not working, do not search for a new company and a career change. Concentrate on getting back into the workforce, then think about the career pivot. Job search cycles are longer now than ever and that more variables your add, then longer it will take to earn your next paycheck.

Job Search Best Practice - Stop Spraying and Praying

Job Search Best Practice - Stop Spraying and Praying

Don't just upload your resume in response to job postings, then go back to the couch, act like you worked hard at identifying the right opportunities and turn on some silly talk show.  You need to do more.

Ramp up your networking.  Attend local events, contact former colleagues, classmates, friends, even neighbor, ask for introductions or informational interviews with people that they believe can be helpful during this job search.  Keep your busy and meeting new people.  Something will break.  It only takes one good meeting to lead to more opportunities.

The Other Side of AI Resumes

The Other Side of AI Resumes

Another negative of AI generated resumes and why the hidden job market is so important. If this sounds self-serving, it is not. Just facts and common sense.

Hiring managers, frankly speaking, are getting tired of reading AI generated resumes. These resumes "mask" deficiencies and paint applications as more "qualified" and successful" than what is the truth.

Hiring managers would prefer Fewer applicants of higher quality. This post will be in two (2) parts, the other coming tomorrow morning.

So, to begin, how to do you get more qualified candidates without posting? Well, simple stated, this is the hidden job market and the only way to access the hidden job market is to NETWORK!!!!

For those of you who are not familiar with the term "hidden job market":

The hidden job market is a term used to describe jobs that aren't advertised or posted online. Most of these jobs are quality positions AND are not posted because the hiring manager does not want to spend the $$$ or dedicate the resources to review / interview alot of candidates. Another reason is that the hiring manager needs to keep this opportunity quiet for many reasons including a forthcoming termination, minimize disruption within the organization as well as competitive issues within the market.

Job Search Strategies - Emphasis for Those Who Have Been on the Sidelines for 90+ Days

Job Search Strategies - Emphasis for Those Who Have Been on the Sidelines for 90+ Days

1.      “Fill the gap” with consulting gigs, volunteerism and training classes.

2.      Understand the importance of writing a solid cover letter

3.      If you do not know how to network, it is time to learn.  Networking should be your #1 channel for finding opportunities.  Concentrate on your “business” network, not “friends and family”.

4.      Take some time and read up about interviewing.  Do not “wing it”.

Keep Your Resume Updated

 Keep Your Resume Updated

This one might be a no-brainer but don’t neglect your resume, even if you’re unemployed. Add every relevant volunteer opportunity or certificate to help your resume stand out. If you feel your career gap is something to hide, think again — most people have had a gap in their work experience.

And if you address it honestly, potential employers may even see your career gap as a plus. That was the time you spent learning. Once you land that job, keep updating your resume as new experiences and achievements pop up — you’ll thank yourself the next time you’re ready to hit the job market.

A New Way for Creating Better Job Search Experiences for Employers and Job Seekers

A New Way for Creating Better Job Search Experiences for Employers and Job Seekers

(A bit provocative but nonetheless important to think about).

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) has changed the game drastically for job search and online applications.  The majority of the resumes fall into a black hole. The “black hole” is real, and it hurts everyone:

1.       The overwhelming number of candidates have no understanding of why this happens.  ATS creates mistrust, deception and stress, not to mention bewilderment

2.       Employers do not have the best candidates in the talent pool because most resumes are not ATS compliant. The interview process ends up being inefficient, ineffective, often resulting in “bad hires,” which are costly to the employer.

3.       With 100+ ATS systems used in the United States, there are no standards; each system has its own criteria. The status quo simply does not work.

Given the statements above, when a high school student applies for college, he/she pays a non-refundable application fee to the school.  The fee is not put towards tuition, housing, books, etc. However, in return, the student gets a response (verbally or written).  (Please continue – the rationale will fall into place).

In the world of ATS, the candidate gets an auto-response “or ghosted” if the resume ATS score is does not meet the algorithm’s requirements for qualification.

Here is my idea:

Let’s create a system where the candidate and employer both have “skin in the game”:

1.       The candidate is required to pay $10 via a digital payment platform of the company’s choice to submit a resume and cover letter under the auspice that the employer will provide a verbal response back indicating reasons for rejection or better yet, offering timeslots for a phone interview?

2.       The company begins the hiring process and chooses who they deem as the best candidate.

3.       The company does not keep the money.  The money is donated to the candidate’s (or company’s) charity of choice.

4.       The company also releases an internal memo / social media announcement stating that they have hired <name> and that <$xxx> were donated to <name of charity>.

Example:

Casa Way Associates, the parent company of Resumes by Allan Brown, is proud to announce that Saundra B. Zoe has accepted an offer to become the firm’s new project manager.  Saundra, a graduate of the Northern Lights University with an MS in Lighting Technology brings a wealth of experience managing technology based programs and is excited for her start date of May 15).  Saundra is a dog lover and the $560 that the firm collected as part of the process will be donated to the City of Malvern’s ASPCA.

Get the picture…?

As a candidate, you need to make an investment in your job search as opposed to "spray and pray".  For the company, better candidates, faster turnaround, improved organizational performance and improved employee relations and engagement, esp. since the application fee goes to a charity.

If the employer charged for applications submissions (colleges do and have for decades), the employer would get less applications, but the candidates who applied would be more qualified.

To the candidate: Would you budget $200 for 20 submissions if you were guaranteed a response, as opposed to the status quo?

To the company: Is there an organization out there willing to try a new idea as opposed to relying on ATS algorithms in order to get motivated, better candidates?

Think about it…

Outplacement Services / College Career Centers- Why These Organizations Need a "Reset" - Part 3

Outplacement Services / College Career Centers- Why These Organizations Need a "Reset" - Part 3

Many firms rely on resume writing and job search strategies that are outdated, generic and vague. They often provide outdated, non ATS compliant formats that are more about functions as opposed to successes. As for job search strategies, the information that is supplied is the lowest common denominator (ex. email blasts)—that yield poor results in today's digital market as opposed to proposing brown-bag lunches, joining industry / professional associations, leveraging past relationships with bosses, colleagues, vendors, friends, classmates.

What has been your experience?

Tuesday, May 19, 2026

Recent LinkedIn Survey:

 Recent LinkedIn Survey:

77% of job seekers whose prior employer paid for outplacement services were dissatisfied with the level of acumen and performance rendered by the outplacement service.

Even if this percentage is exaggerated or the context is vague, this tells me (and should be obvious to you) that the outplacement companies are not doing what they are paid to do. As much as I despise the way college / university career centers engage there students, this one bites deeper because companies are paying for a subpar service / experience and it is hurting the job seeker.

The Perfect Job (not available)

Don’t Look for a Perfect Job - It does not exist. If this is your strategy, you are going to be bitterly disappointed. If you feel you are qualified for 60-65% of the requirements (credentials + skills), then apply.

Hidden Job Market -

 Hidden Job Market -

Simple stated, the best jobs are not always advertised. These jobs are held back for several reasons, one of which is the overwhelming number of applicants that come through the online portals. Other is the cost of advertising for jobs.

But, in my opinion, the most important one is the requirements are so unique that they want referrals from qualified sources (employees, selected vendors, trusted advisors). If you believe this to be true, and you should, that is why you avoid the job boards and NETWORK, NETWORK NETWORK and when you stop networking, keep NETWORKING!!!
