Ageism Stats in our Federal Government

Ageism...Things that make you go hmmm...

The average age of Members of the House at the beginning of the 117th Congress was 58.4 years; of Senators, 64.3 years.

There are four (4) US Senators over 80 yo. A 5th, Diane Feinstein, died last year. Chuck Grassley, 90-year-old US senator from Iowa, was hospitalized earlier this week with an infection.

49.8% of all sitting members of the House of Rep. will be 60 by the end of 2024.

The two leading candidates for President are Joe Biden (81) and Donald Trump (76).

The Age Discrimination Act of 1967 protects those over 40 yo. However, given the overt ageism we see in the workplace, it appears that our elected leaders missed the memo. Sad, especially since most are at the ageism where he/ she would have been "abandoned" by the job market because of age.

Perhaps it is time that ageism becomes an issue in this election (workers who have been phrased out of careers because employers do not want to pay them a fair wage and opt to go with younger, less expensive workers).

One way to curb ageism - find incentives (tax breaks) for companies to balance their employment age to skew upwards and keep / hire older workers who are qualified, vibrant and ready to contribute NOW!

As voters, it is our responsibility to push our elected officials to enact solutions.

Thoughts and comments are appreciated and expected. This ageism garbage must be addressed.
