High Paying Remote Jobs Are Fading Away:

High Paying Remote Jobs Are Fading Away:

New data suggests that high-paying remote positions are almost as rare as they were before the pandemic.

According to a recent analysis of over one million job postings between January and July from Ladders, a career platform for six-figure salary jobs, those offering salaries of $100,000 or more and that also offer remote or hybrid work plunged 15% in the second quarter of 2025.

Only about 6% of high-paying jobs now provide location flexibility—down from a high of 41% in 2022, and just a couple points above the 4% recorded back in pre-pandemic 2019.

By comparison, roughly 20% of jobs advertised on LinkedIn offer hybrid or remote work options. According to Indeed, fully remote positions advertised on its platform jumped from 2.4% of all postings in 2019 to 10.2% in 2022, but have since declined to about 7.9%.

The Rush to Return to the Office Is Stalling

The Rush to Return to the Office Is Stalling

From Today's Wall Street Journal (wsj.com):

Big companies from Microsoft to Paramount and NBCUniversal are ordering workers to show up to the office more often. If only their staffs would heed the call.

Even as corporate bosses cut back on remote work and ratchet up in-office mandates, average office attendance has barely budged across U.S. workplaces. Companies are struggling to enforce mandates, and many managers tasked with herding folks into the office would rather not be there either. Other executives have made their peace with hybrid work, especially amid cooling consumer confidence and an unpredictable trade war.

Survey Says...

The Disappearance Of Remote Jobs

The popularity of remote work has been declining since its peak in 2022. According to Axios, citing data from Indeed, job postings offering remote or hybrid options reached a high of over 10% in May 2022. However, by the end of July 2024, this figure had fallen to 7.6%, indicating a significant reduction in remote work opportunities.

This trend is exemplified by Amazon's recent mandate for employees to return to the office full-time, a move that could potentially trigger a domino effect across industries. Given Big Tech's influential role in shaping workplace norms, this pivot away from remote work may signal a broader return to traditional office-based employment, marking a notable reversal of the work-from-home revolution sparked by the pandemic.

Another Job Scam - WFH

Work-from-home jobs

The past few years have seen an increase in candidates seeking work-from-home positions. Scammers are aware of the rising popularity of remote work and target such candidates with work-from-home job scams. Often, the scam involves persuading a job seeker to pay a fee or purchase items. For example, the position may require you to submit an initial registration fee to start, with the promise of commissions if you can get others to sign on, too. If the job exists, it's likely a type of pyramid scheme or multilevel marketing organization.Source: Indeed.com+++++++++++++++Looking for a new career position or guidance about best practices for job search, including how to handle ATS? WFH - IBM takes a stand...

Another example of how WFH is diminishing...While I understand what the senior executives are try to do, what if you are a manager in an expensive area (ex. SF, LA, NY, Miami) and you read this line of the mandate:

"Managers who don't live within 50 miles of an IBM facility, a source told Bloomberg, must move closer by the beginning of August or "separate" from the company"

What do you do? If you live 50 miles from the office in order to afford to buy a home and you read this...is it legal (YES)...enforceable (NOT SURE...ethical (I say no) (Hmmm... - tell me what you think).

Define "Work from Home" "Hybrid" or "Remote"

Employee / Employer relations are at an all-time worse in more than 50 years. Neither side can accurately define "Work from Home (WFH)", "hybrid" or "remote".

How do you define these terms? Please comment below and I will answer each comment.

Hybrid Work Issue -

One issue that I would like to know has to do with company benefits as related to working in the office. This may apply only to Bay Area firms but I will ask for the broad audience.

Are companies that are offering the hybrid option (2 - 3x week) still providing transportation services? Meal services? Concierge? Fitness Facilities?

Layoffs - 2022 - What is the true motivation behind the pink slip?

Issue that deserves attention, no matter the answer.

Given the abundance of layoffs in the tech industry, I am curious how many were employers who were coming to the office 3 - 5 days a week and how many were work from home? It is a statistic that cannot be published / actually counted, but the results would provide insight as to what the true motivations are behind the pink slips.

Please comment.

Two Phones (one for Business; one for Personal)

Separate Phone Lines:

I have had two (2) cell phone lines for years (some friends call me "@2phones") - one (1) for business and one (1) for personal. It is for my "mental stability" - keeping my business and personal separate.

However, with work from home (WFH) as well as the regular demands of life, you should invest in a second phone line AND do not be shy about charging it back to your company.

Consider it to be part of any negotiation in terms of compensation and WFH opportunities.

More WFH

Thought Work From Home (WFH) was short term? Well, not necessarily as short as many had hoped. If it appears that WFH is in the cards for your foreseeable future, you can leverage several "assets" into a negotiation so the company, and not YOU, pay for office equipment and other unanticipated business - related expense.

If you're employed by a company or organization that supports your work-from-home setup, request the equipment you need as soon as you start working from home, or within a few days of realizing you need something new.

It's extremely important to set a precedent early that you will ask for what you need to get your job done comfortably. These items might include the right monitor, keyboard, mouse, chair, desk, printer, software, and so forth. Organizations that are accustomed to remote employees often have a budget for home office equipment. Ask what it is and how often it's renewed. It also doesn't hurt to ask whether there's a loan agreement or who will pay for return shipping or disposal of outdated equipment. Some remote organizations allow employees to bring in a consultant to make sure their workspaces are set up to be ergonomic.
