Be Smart about Career Changes / Risk Taking

I recognize that working for others can be very difficult.  However, before you "jump" ship, be smart and evaluate the ramifications.  Specifically:

1. Where do you want to be in three (3) years?  This is a career assessment, not a geo question
2.  If you are thinking about trying a "start-up", thoroughly research the market that you are interested in.  Is it growing?  Overcrowded?  Consolidated?
3.  Is the business model for the start-up offer a value proposition that is new to the market?
4.  What is the professional pedigree of the founders / senior executives?
5.  What are the company's financial resources?
