To Career Changers:

 To Career Changers:

1. Take time and read about the skills required in the type of role you wish to transition to - be certain that you have the skills and proper training / certifications.

2. Be prepared to validate your rationale about why you have the skills and qualifications for the role. Hiring managers will ask and you better have a thoughtful answer as a response. Demonstrated why the role is a natural next step in your career.

Why Do Young Professionals Leave the Workforce / Change Careers

Why Do Young Professionals Leave the Workforce / Change Careers

Lack of Advancement Opportunities

A lack of clear growth paths is frustrating young employees who want to advance quickly. Many companies fail to offer defined promotion or development plans, leaving workers feeling stuck in positions with no future.

This stagnation often leads to disengagement and, ultimately, a decision to leave the workforce. The absence of upward mobility is a dealbreaker for many young adults.

They seek roles where they can see immediate progress and feel valued, and when traditional jobs don’t offer that, they’re more likely to leave in search of better opportunities elsewhere.

Limiting the Variables

 Career Changers:

For those that are very frustrated with their job search, heed this advice:

Do not try to do too many things at one time. The more variables you include on your search, the longer it is going to take and the more stressed / frustrated you will become. Job searches are taking longer now given the economic and political conditions (state, local and fed) and coupled with the traditional early summer time slowdown in hiring and the reluctance of employers to define WFH and hybrid, you are only adding unnecessary frustration.

In short, minimize the following variables down to 1-2. Variables are defined as: (non-inclusive):

1. WFH or Hybrid

2. Geo relocation

3. Career change

4. Moving from an individual contributor to manager

5. Change of industry

Embracing Career Changes and Challenges.

I wrote this to a old old friend (a high school teammate) of mine.  I hope you can read, translate to your situation / your friend's / family member's situation and adapt accordingly.

Embracing Career Changes and Challenges.

"You can sell ice to an eskimo with your experience but you MUST change your perspective and tactics. Look in other industries for SALES / CUSTOMER SUCCESS JOBS. Many of these jobs can be done remotely. The old verticals are in the past. They want young hunters. It sucks but that is the way it is. Think of three industries (B2B or B2C that interest you).

If you think you can continue to do the same thing year after year, you are way off!!!  That is not how life works!  I KNOW you reboot your career but you cannot stay in the same industry. It sucks but life happens to all of us. I changed careers because I would have went PSYCHO on several idiots in web publishing. It is a dirty game and I hated it. I found my way, Marcus found his way, Pete found his way. Matt found his way and you will too if you think outside your comfort zone.

1. Car Sales

2. Truck Sales

3. Corporate Ticket Sales

4. High End Retail Sales

All of the above are just examples.

As for LI, these people are for networking only. Not friends or confidants. Delete all personal posts. Keep your business and personal separate.

There are a ton of jobs out there in your field- many are remote. Think outside the box.  You can find your way, maybe not make the $$$ your did in the past but it can lead to better opportunities, even at 63. If you have to take 2 part-time jobs, so be it.   It is OK. We all have been through a ton of crap in every phase of the game. Don't worry about what others think! I don't care what anybody thinks about me anymore. Nor should you.

In the interim, take some LinkedIn certification courses (related to your career) and add to the resume. STAY RELEVANT!!!!

Career Change

Before you decide on a career change, be honest with yourself and make certain there is some connection. I work with clients all the time who are frustrated with their jobs. However, the choice many make for a career change is so abstract and unrelated to their skills, they are setting themselves up for failure / disappointment.

In short - no connection, bad idea.

Thinking about a career change?

  Thinking about a career change?

One of the best methods to identify what will work best for you is the identify the skills, qualifications, and keywords define your direction. Be honest with yourself, do you have the right experience and successes to validate your transition in the your eyes as well as in the eyes of the hiring manager or recruiter? Use these insights to highlight your most relevant achievements, skills, and experiences on your resume and cover letter as related to the career change.

If you do not have the proper prerequisites, you need to rethink your intended direction.

Why do I write this? Well - too many people hate their job or their boss so much that they think a career change is the answer. No! Sometimes, it is just finding a new employer.
