Job Titles - IT Project Manager

For the rest of this year, all of my posts will be about job titles and definitions of each title. Sounds boring, perhaps it is. But I will tell you that job titles are important and it is a difference maker in terms of pay, upward mobility, authority, prestige and more.

All of you need to be aware of what a job title truly means.

The first one is IT Project Manager.

What is an IT project manager?

An IT project manager is a professional charged with overseeing the process of planning, executing and delegating responsibilities around an organization's information technology (IT) pursuits and goals. (Thank you - Wesley Chan - techtarget.com).

IT project managers manager initiatives within the bigger picture (or program). These managers often do not have direct reports but manage staff cross-functionally. He / she may manage budgets, vendor relationships, timelines, project delivery, adjustments and more. IT project managers are technical in scope but do blend business acumen with technical expertise. In some cases, these professionals are client - facing.

Special note - If you are a project manager and managing the logistics and a migration / conversion but are delegating all elements to more technical staff, you are not an IT project manager. You are a project manager or assuming an IT - related project with have a technical background. Office managers, Chief of Staffs, and others do this but they are not truly IT project managers.
