Is your Resume Flawed - Reliance on Job Titles

Is your Resume Flawed - Reliance on Job Titles

While job titles are important (I could and will write about this in coming posts), the hiring manager will likely understand the functions you perform. In short, she / he knows what sales people do, what IT project managers do, what servers do. What they want to see are your successes / accomplishments:

1. Grew account base from 10 to 30.

2. Planned and managed a $250K software migration

3. Check average per person was 20% hiring than other staff.

About Job Titles (REPOST)

About Job Titles

Job titles vary wildly across companies. What’s a “Supervising Producer” at one place might be a “Talent Lead” or “Department Head” at another. Don’t let terminology keep you from finding your fit.

Misleading Job Titles

  Misleading Job Titles

Inaccurate job title can be damaging from a compensation, client relations, consideration for promotions / transfers and more. Job titles do have different meanings across diverse industries, driving confusion. For example, in the financial services industry, the title "Vice President" is used indiscriminately while in all other industries, the title indicates a strategic / leadership role.

Job titles can be a determining factor about the incumbent feeling appreciated at work or not. It can also have a massive influence on whether a candidate will consider moving roles, companies or even industries.

Using Job Titles as Part of your Job Search

Using Job Titles as Part of your Job Search

When you apply for jobs, use the specific job title listed in the job posting in your resume and in your cover letter. The job title is one of the most important keyword phrases that employers’ applicant tracking systems (ATS) will look for when screening the applications they receive.

Mentioning the title of the job that you are seeking also makes it easier for the reader (aka hiring manager or recruiter) to know exactly the position of interest). These people see hundreds of resumes, usually for multiple position openings.

How to handle a bad job title

 Job Titles.

Companies get "cute" with job titles, esp. start-ups. The job title "Evangelist" and "Guru" mean nothing in the scheme of salary administration and are so vague that most people have no idea what the incumbent does for a living.

If you were unfortunate enough to earn the title of "Relationship Guru", which means nothing, but your actual responsibility are that of a "Customer Engagement Director", then use this format for your resume:

Relationship Guru (Customer Engagement Director), name of company, City, ST; DATE
