Many people I speak with are seeking career advancement but have not thought about all the strategy and issues (primary and underlying) that are involved in correctly managing a job search. I tell clients (and prospective clients) that before they embark on a new search, be methodological, not impulsive. Think through the following:
1. What is your short term career objective for the next 2 - 3 years? Long term goal (3 - 5 years)?
2. Identify your target industry. Do you have the requisite skills to be successful in this industry? Recognized that many skills are transferable from industry to industry and have a flat learning curve (i.e. sales, finance, marketing, customer care) while others require specialized training (i.e. engineering, skilled trades, healthcare).
3. Which skills do you have that are unique considering your career direction?
