Your references are your assets. Do not give your references to hiring managers unless you know you want the job. In addition, call your references, let each person know where things stand as related to your job search. Inform each reference to expect a call from the potential employer, providing job title of interest and a general overview of the job..

Don't let your references be unprepared. They are doing you a favor by taking time out of their day or personal time to speak to someone.
