Job Title Definition - Controller v Comptroller

For the rest of this year, all of my posts will be about job titles and definitions of each title. Sounds boring, perhaps it is. But I will tell you that job titles are important and it is a difference maker in terms of pay, upward mobility, authority, prestige and more.

All of you need to be aware of what a job title truly means.

CONTROLLER V. COMPTROLLER

The controller manages accounting records and is responsible for the production of financial reports. The controller oversees all employees involved in the accounting process, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, inventory and compliance. (Investopedia)

Controllers are more strategic than tactic and are involved in the accounting and reporting functions. Controllers are not financial analysts and do not get involved in finance-driven decisions.

On the other hand, a comptroller oversees the accounting and financial reporting procedures of an organization. The is comptroller is senior to controllers and reports to the chief financial officer, the president, or the chief executive officer. ... The comptroller manages all accounting transactions, budgets, and loan activity as well as defines each general ledger (GL) category by establishing the chart of accounts.

The comptroller maintains a system of internal controls to ensure the appropriate securing and use of funds, including assisting internal and external auditors.
