Career Management Issues - From the Company Perspective

Career Management Issues - From the Company Perspective

Companies view employee career management from a staff retention, engagement and business continuity perspective.  When companies handle these issues badly, high turnover, low morale and poor worker skills, from lack or non-existent learning and development initiatives, take precedent.

Hurdle #1 - Fewer middle-management roles mean traditional vertical promotion ladders no longer exist.  This is important to understand because the job market thrives on mobility.  Without mobility, bottlenecks exist and those hurt are at the lower / entry levels - hence why recent college grads are having such a hard time and low-level to mid-level staff are "job hugging"

Information for Students Seeking to Begin Their Careers

Information for Students Seeking to Begin Their Careers

For students starting job searches, the three (3) tips below should be useful:

1. Network!  Think of the people you know -- relatives, friends, professors, classmates, co-workers at summer jobs,

and others. Make more of an effort to meet with people, and use these conversations to ask their advice, to make

them aware of your job search, to learn more about their jobs or their organizations, and to get the names of others

who might be useful in your job search.

2. Create a contact database. Write down all the employers you contact, the date you sent your résumé, any contact made,

people you talk to, and notes about those contacts. Keep a notepad with you at all times -- take notes as soon as you hear

about an opportunity or when you leave an interview. Get into the habit of updating your database daily.

3. Make a "to do" list every day. This will help you organize your list of priorities and keep you focused on finding

that perfect job.

How about a professional development course in MS Excel? Perhaps a class in SQL? How about a LI Learning course in project management? For you aspiring marketers, how about a Google Analytics course? Employers want to see your commitment to excellence / improvement.
